Three reasons affiliate marketers should check out Google Plus
Following up on the heels of the less-than-successful Google Wave and Google Buzz, some experts note Google’s, poor track record with social networking and suggest that Google Plus is destined to fail.
Others, such as affiliate marketer Pace Lattin, claim that Google is poised to unseat Facebook in the same way that Facebook displaced My Space just a couple of years ago.
While there’s no way to know for sure whether Google will hit the mark with Plus, there are three good reasons you, as an affiliate marketer, should check out Google Plus:
Reason #1: It’s a category killer
Google has had an opportunity to watch and learn how people use social networking tools.
With Plus, they’ve taken the best features of the most popular tools such as Facebook, My Space and Twitter and combined them with the content sharing features of social tools such as Digg and Stumble Upon.
For social media, Google Plus seems to aspire to be an all-in-one sharing solution for everything from photos of your kids to business clippings with colleagues. It can be long with links or short and sweet. This all-in-one approach will appeal to overwhelmed and fatigued social media users.
Reason #2: It makes it easy to segment your followers
One of the most confusing aspects of Facebook is figuring out how to keep people from seeing content that isn’t appropriate for them.
For instance, do you really want your mom to see those photos from the Affiliate Summit happy hour? And I know you don’t want the people who follow you for one of your affiliate businesses seeing your beach photos.
The “circles” feature in Google Plus makes it much easier to control who sees your content. Assuming that you want to, you’ll be able to use one account for family, friends and the people who want to buy your affiliate offers without having to share content with groups that shouldn’t, and don’t want to, see that content.
Reason #3: It’s already as many features as Facebook
As soon as it launched, Google Plus had all of the features you can find in Facebook – messaging, photos and chat. It also has a few others such as an RSS reader, a full-fledged email program, profiles, documents, a shopping portal, a wiki, and web search.
As Facebook looks to increase the amount of time users spend on its site, they’re actively adding features. Google already has those features, and much, much more. The next step, which no one is talking about, will be integration of Google Plus recommendations in other Google tools. Think of the excellent targeting that Facebook ads are able to do. Now think of them spread across dozens of robust web applications.
Now that we’ve discussed why you should check out Google Plus, I want to take note of one thing that’s missing, and that’s users. While Plus boasts more than 10 million users and one billion pieces of shared content per day, Facebook currently has more than 750 millions users and more than 30 billion pieces of shared content per month.
