Build backlinks fast by commenting on blogs

When you’re launching a new affiliate site, it can be tough to get noticed.

You probably find yourself posting new content and wondering why your terrific content is taking forever to get indexed by Google.

As a marketer, you need to do everything you can to tell Google and the other search engines that your site is filled with original and compelling content, and that it’s getting updated on a regular basis.

One of the best ways to do this quickly while increasing your backlinks is to comment on blogs. Blog commenting builds your authority in your niche while while capitalizing on the popularity of someone else’s blog.

However, before you go and leave comments on a dozen blogs, you need to make sure you’re devoting your time and energy posting on the right blogs. You’ll get the best results if you’re posting on blogs in your niche with good PageRank and active comment threads.

The secrets to finding relevant blogs

There are two easy ways to find blogs in your niche. Search is the first. If you’re looking for a blog about dog training, use the following search query:

site:.com url:blog “post a comment” -”comments closed” -”you must be logged in” “dog training”

You can swap your keywords for dog training when you’re doing your search. Also, this query will work better in some niches than others.

Google Alerts is another way to track down active blogs. To do this, go to Google Alerts and follow these instructions:

  1. Under “Search Terms,” enter your keywords.

  2. Under “type,” select “blogs.”

  3. Under “how often,” select “once a day.” (You can do more if you wish!)

  4. Under “volume,” select “all results.” (You might want to change this to “only the best results” based on the volume of alerts sent to you.)

  5. And finally, under “deliver to,” select the email you want the message delivered to.

What to say in your comments

Although I haven’t mentioned comment spam yet, I want to clarify that this method is not an excuse to spam websites in your niche with misleading, irrelevant or dull comments. All that will do is to alienate you and your site from potential allies and customers.

A better strategy is to post one or two comments every day, and post them on sites that are influential in your niche. In addition, make sure your comments are good … good enough to be approved by the site owner.

When you find a site that’s relevant and that allows comments, you’ll want to read the article you’re commenting on first before you leave your comment. And to assure that your comment is considered, make it a good one. Engage the other commenters. Add to the discussion.

Here are examples of a not-so-good and a good comment:

Not-so-good comment: Awesome post.

Good comment: I disagree with your assumption that German Shepherds are the easiest dogs to train. I have owned four Shepherds, and while they’ve all taken to dog training marvelously, they each varied greatly in how quickly they picked things up.

Keyword relevance

So as you write great comments, make sure you keep your comment relevant to the keyword strategy of your site. So if you’re linking back to a dog training, make sure you’re not commenting on a cat product review blog.

Many bloggers who use this technique will advise you to put your site keywords into the name field. While that supposedly helps by creating keyword-rich anchor text, I do not recommend this technique. Why? It makes your post look like comment spam, and increases the odds that your post will be rejected by the site owner.

Don’t overpost

One final thing to keep in mind is to remember that too much of a good thing can be too much. While this technique might seem like a quick and easy way to go from page 10 to page 1, be careful.

Just like the other tactics of your link building strategy, starting off with a steady and regular habit is the most effective way to improve your search engine rankings over time.

I recommend using this technique no more than twice a day for the best results.

What if the comment is left on an older post like this, is it still effective to leave a post for back linking? How old can they be?

    • Jeff Greer June 23, 2011 at 9:56 pm

      Hi Shane,

If it’s on a good site, It will help your SEO. Whether it helps your traffic as much depends on a variety of factors. If it’s an old post that still gets comments, it’s probably getting traffic. And some of that traffic will make it back to your site. But if it’s a post that isn’t getting traffic, there won’t be a lot of traffic coming through to your site.

Hello, I have read with attention your article, and it’s really (really!) ineresting, because I didn’t know the Google Alert Tecnique to find other Blog near my argument, even if it is equally important (or more important) to find Blogs with dofollow attribute and the page where visitor put the backlink with a minimum of paga rank value.
Then, I have not understood very well the speech about keywords in the name field. This is a wordpress plugin named KkeywordLuv, that is implemented by the same blogger just to give the visitor the opportunity to place a backlink in exchange of comments left on blogs (this is so an gifts exchange, I mean), so I think the blogger has no reason to consider spam those kind of comments.

    • Jeff Greer July 27, 2011 at 9:40 pm

I don’t know that plugin. I will check it out. Thanks!

The importance of back links must be considered by every marketer, working for someone or for yourself. The use of SEO Quake product makes the job easier as it allows you to easily see the PR score of a site. The search strings left by one of your correspondents was very useful to me.

    • Jeff Greer November 16, 2011 at 5:40 pm

How many backlinks a day or week do you think is optimal for a new blog. How many is too many ?

    • Jeff December 13, 2011 at 7:55 am

TP, make sure you build links gradually. If you start with nothing and have dozens of links a day, Google will figure you out.

  27. Mike March 6, 2012 at 4:52 am

Very useful information especially about not using keywords in name field. This can work on some sites, but I do think others reject comments unless they use a real looking name. I don’t really know how Google scores keyword based anchor text versus a name, but certainly any link is better than a rejection.
