Better Returns with Google AdSense: Tips, Ideas, and Resources for 2014

 

Google AdSense is one of those money-making opportunities that you either love or hate.


It’s good in the sense that it’s easy to implementing and, depending on your niche, you can actually earn a good amount of money without a lot of effort. On the bad side it can be an absolute waste of time because people are very ad blind plus you often earn just pennies on the click.


Though our main topic of AffiliatePrograms.com is about affiliate marketing we do know that people still have an interest in Google AdSense. It’s been a while since our last post about AdSense so why not get up-to-speed on making better returns with the program in 2014 (and beyond).


Living with AdBlock


AdBlock is an extension for browsers that allows the user to block ads which is quite effective for just about any type of pop-up/under, pre-roll ads (like on YouTube), and of course AdSense (and other display ads).


Google, of course, hates this, along with many other advertising platforms.


But… it’s here to stay.


It also means that it’s likely that many people landing on your site may be using the extension and that’s perfectly okay (it’s their choice). It does mean that they’re not seeing AdSense – so you’re not earning.


If someone has this extension installed then they are already not likely to click ads but AdBlock does have a whitelist feature that allows them to configure it to show ads on sites they approve.


What you can do, if anything, is include code to detect AdBlock and politely ask them to whitelist the website so they can show support by viewing the ads (which may also deliver one they are willing to click).


Embrace Mobile/Responsive Already


It’s 2014 and the Web Dev community has been harking mobile-friendly, responsive designs for years so there’s no real reason that you haven’t updated and adapted your site.


Increasingly – you are seeing a higher number of individuals visiting your website through mobile. By failing to implementing a mobile/responsive site, along with ads that match the various browser sizes, you are missing out on prime opportunities.



  • Find new themes or update your current one

  • Track and test best practices for mobile

  • Monitor and one-up the competition


You’ve got to get things going sooner than later. It doesn’t take too much time to get setup for mobile/responsive nor is it going to cost you much money so just take the plunge already.


Experiment and Test


You’re not going to strike it big with Google AdSense like you might have back when it first began because so much of the web has changed and the same is true with its users.


You can’t expect to slap on Google AdSense and call it a day.


Google knows this and so should you which is why they have updated their tools, frequently, to help you adapt to the changing times.


Besides the new ad units and formats you also have access to Experiments which allow you to run… experiments against different ads to see which works best; this should help you understand what your visitors really want (and so you maximize your earnings).


The other item of note is that you need to do more testing (A/B) with your popular pages:



  • Different placements

  • Above (or below) fold

  • Removing comments in place of an ad

  • Rotating between AdSense and other includes


Basically – don’t just set it and forget it.


One More Thing…


Take it all with a grain of salt (what you read in this post and all those others when you type in “Google AdSense Tips” and other variants). Remember that some niches just work better than others so if they’re explaining their method it’s based on their niche so not all will apply.


Also – don’t always follow the best practices – that’s why you should be doing experiments and testing so you can see what fits YOUR community. It’s not all “make it this size and color” that will do the trick.


And last of all…


Have fun with it. Don’t get too upset if you’re earning pennies because it’s better than nothing. In a lot of ways just see it as a good entry way into other, better opportunities like direct advertising or affiliate marketing. Use the tools (and resources) to learn the ropes or to take action to improve optimization – then port that to other areas of your work.
