How to Make the New Year Resolutions Stick

Every year we promise that we’ll work on our core goals. We promise we’ll quit smoking, work on our health, grow our business, and improve our skills.
The first week (or so) always goes great. We have tons of energy to jump right into those new year resolutions but as time goes on we start to let them go.
At first it’s a lapse in one of the days we work on the goals; then it becomes a week… and then we drop it all together just to bring it up again in the new year.
Let’s make a commitment to those resolutions.
Do what you want about the vices, health, and whatnot – let’s focus on the business side of the resolutions. Here is what I found to be effective in making them stick…
A. Start with a logical goal
Many resolutions are a bit outlandish:
- Lose 50 pounds
- Earn an extra $1,000 a month
- No more eating out
The problem is that these are so wildly different from your current lifestyle so it’s natural that you’ll recede back to old habits because they are difficult. The problem, too, is that they’re so far out there that you’re not looking at the actionable elements of reaching those goals.
To make a resolution stick you need to base the goal within logic and reality.
For something like business you should set a goal for an extra $100 a month and then scale it rather than placing all this pressure on yourself the first day of the new year. By keeping it within reason you’ll actually keep with the goal and develop those skills that will eventually allow you to grow.
B. Take it slow
Another issue with resolutions is that you’re dumping yourself right into this monumental task.
On NYE you’re out there partying and suddenly you’re expected to get that gym membership, find a new client, or go cold turkey the same day you’re hungover and tired. It doesn’t work like that.
You’re better off taking it slowly.
If you’re trying to learn a new skill for your business then spend an extra 5 minutes each day exploring it rather than trying to commit the entire afternoon. By going slowly you’re naturally fall into this new, good habit that eventually fruitions across the year versus burning out only a few weeks after chasing it.
C. Find a community
We really place all the work on ourselves for our new year resolutions even though so many others have taken on the same goals.
If you want the resolutions to stick then you need to reach out to others.
By creating (or joining) a support network you will have others that will keep you working on those goals because there is accountability. The others will get on you if you’re slacking.

Find those like-minded as you and you’ll all accomplish your goals.
That’s really all there’s to it for keeping those resolutions.
