How To Effectively Place Banner Ads on Your Sites

You only have a second or two to make a lasting impression when someone visits your blog, so make sure you have the proper content to advertising ratio on your web site. There is nothing worse than visiting a site that is overwhelmed with ads and little to no useful content.

When it comes to web site and blog advertising, Google Adsense is still one of the easiest and most effective ways to get paid for your site traffic. Adsense has been so successful simply because they make it so easy for ANYONE to start running ads on their sites. All you need to do is place a line of code on your site, then Google Adsense will start serving ads that are related to your site content and you will earn a commission on every click.

Figuring out where you are going to place the banner ads on your site is more of a dilemma than anything else. On the Google Adsense web site, they ask the following questions for people who are trying to decide what the best ad locations are.

  • What is the user trying to accomplish by visiting my site?

  • What do they do when viewing a particular page?

  • Where is their attention likely to be focused?

  • How can I integrate ads into this area without getting in the users’ way?

  • How can I keep the page looking clean, uncluttered and inviting?

Looking at your web site while also asking yourself these questions will help you get a better understanding of the different locations you can integrate your ads with your content. Google has also created a heat map and design template for the best locations to place their banner ads.

In the graphic below, the dark orange sections are the highest recommended locations, then orange, yellow and white. Since Google Adsense is on a pay per click model, it’s important to make sure your ads are seen in prominent locations, but also bring value to your site.

It’s important to realize that people read web sites from the top left then towards the center. One of the most effective ways to display advertising on your site is to blend it in nicely with you content and site design, so it actually looks like content. The majority of people on the internet are already aware of what advertising looks like and thanks to banner blindness, many ads are simply ignored.

Be sure to take a look at your site design and match it up with the heat map image above. You want all of your major content to be the focus of your site, but integrating the right amount of advertising will also compliment you site, while possibly generating a decent amount of revenue as well.

In the next post, we will talk about the importance of using different banner ad sizes and which are best for making the most money.
