Titled “Exploring Online Affiliate Marketing Trends”, this survey of U.K. based affiliates offers some great insights into how the global affiliate marketing business is performing, and some of the key influences that trends in technology and commerce impact affiliate marketing.
You won’t be surprised to know that the impact of Google Panda is one of the top issues covered. Some other hot-button issues include Google’s desire to grab hold of the affiliate industry, how affiliates have done over the past 12 months, and the impact of social media.
According to Fiona Robertson, bigmouthmedia’s head of performance marketing, “The affiliate market in many ways is the bedrock of e-commerce. Our survey is an important tool for listening to the space and making it aware of the trends and opportunities.”
While many of us tend to look at our affiliate marketing businesses as subservient to the overall economy, Robertson is suggesting that the affiliate industry is actually out in front of the economy, setting measures and trends for commerce in general.

- 71.5 percent of affiliates suspect that Google has designs on becoming the largest affiliate compared to 56 percent in 2010.
- 31.4 percent of respondents have been impacted by Google Panda.
- 32.6 percent of respondents see opportunities in mobile marketing.
- The biggest growth is in location-based marketing which has leapt up 12.4 percent to 40.7 percent since 2010.
- SEO and content marketing remain the most popular marketing strategies at 63.2 percent.
- Social media has leapt from zero in 2010 to 27.2 percent in 2011.
- Affiliates have increasingly adopted a blended approach toward marketing, with 40 percent opting for combining two or three different methods to reach their audiences and 28 percent using four or more.
