What to do when Your Affiliate Income dries up: Five Helpful Suggestions

Over time your market will make a shift.

New products making their way to the market will begin to eat at the shares of those already established. Trends will play a part in this shift. Likewise, people now just getting introduced to the industry may not care for its past and focus on what’s available, now, and what’s coming in the future.

Basically: Products and services fall from favor because the consumers mature and move on.

Then this happens …

You held onto promoting the product for as long as you could because it was making a profit. As the weeks and months go by it starts to dwindle in popularity. If you didn’t make the shift to offering new products/services then you’re seeing a dip in your profits.

It’s beginning to dry up.

Rather than riding the wagon ‘til the wheels fall off I want to offer five helpful suggestions for making the transition to your next viable affiliate offer:

1. Scope the competition

I would like to go out on a limb and figure that one of the reasons why your affiliate income dried up was from the lack of trying new strategies long-enough to get viable data. You probably did test a few things but didn’t let them run long enough for them to stick.

So … you stuck with what worked and you rode that until things started to slow all the while your competition picked up speed.

Well …

Use their hard work to your advantage.

  • They’ve done the research

  • They’ve formed the content

  • They’ve ran the advertisement

I’m not telling you to steal their work.

What I’m telling you is to use it as a launching point of your own. The information they’re sharing in public will give ideas for where you need to be going if you’re far out of alignment with the industry.

Pay attention to what they’re doing, keep tabs on their efforts, and then go above and beyond.

Competition is healthy in any industry because it forces the parties to test and try new strategies. Each new strategy will, in turn, encourage competitors to bring their A-game.

2. Mine your analytics

The data you’ve been collecting should have always been going toward your efforts but … I doubt you’ve been using them to their full potential. In fact, I would say that a vast amount of affiliate marketers don’t really even bother looking into their analytics – especially when they think they’re in the clear and readily pulling in commissions.

  • What are your traffic sources?

  • What offers are converting?

  • What pages make them bounce?

  • What are the errors of your work?

Your analytics will help you plot a graph. This graph will show you the lifeline of your affiliate promotions. When you see it start to decline you know it’s either time to step up your efforts or begin searching for a new opportunity.

Because you’ll have this analytical data you can pair the information with the options available on the affiliate networks.

You’ll also know where to focus on your traffic generation efforts and which pages need to be updated in order to improve conversions.

Using your analytics will help you power through the transitional process. You’ll come ready with the data you need to make intelligent decisions on where to take your affiliate marketing.

3. Niche down on the products

I’m going out on a limb to say that some of your main affiliate offers probably had to deal with an overarching topic. Things like “Complete Guide to X” or “Y – The Definite Course”.

The problem with big feature products is that there are always others trying to make one bigger and better which means consumers are easily enticed to the new, better offer.

Instead of chasing these big products you could consider niching it down and providing a wide range of affiliated products that answer specific questions.

By doing so you can diversify your income streams so you’re not stuck with all your eggs in one basket.

You could then use the data behind which affiliate offers do well and find comparable products within that category to cross promote or upsell – this is why I’ve already mentioned to mine your analytics.

4. Talk to the affiliate manager

This is about as easy as it gets:

  • Talk to your affiliate manager

  • Talk to your affiliate manager

  • Talk to your affiliate manager

Their job is to help. Their job is to make you successful. They know what’s working and can give you sound advice on what to promote. Spend the minute or two to send over an email getting their attention then get the ball rolling with new promotions.

5. Create your own

If the market doesn’t give you something new and worthwhile to promote than take it upon yourself to create the defining product for the industry.

Creating an information product for your industry allows you to become the source. It will be other affiliates promoting your work because they are all seeking something fresh to promote since the marketplace had begun to dry up.

This is what you’d need to do:

And with that … you didn’t just find alternative income sources for those drying up … you built one that will sustain your business and help it grow better than before.

Don’t get too comfortable in your affiliate marketing. Things can change overnight. You must keep your finger on the pulse of the industry. Survey your community and find what new interests they hold. Pay attention to the newcomer’s to the market. Scout the trends. Be ready to roll out new campaigns on a whim else you could see those affiliate earnings dry up before you can react appropriately.
