Tips for getting your keyword strategy started

Tips for getting your keyword strategy started - affiliateprograms.comYour keyword strategy is the heart of your site’s search engine optimization, or SEO.

Any words or phrases on your affiliate website can be keywords (or key phrases). But to get the most traffic possible from the search engines, you’re going to want to focus on those terms that people are typing into the search engine that most closely align with your business.

These terms can be almost anything. Common terms that affiliate marketers will include in their keyword strategy include “how to” terms that help solve a problem, services related to a niche, and brand/product names and descriptors such as model numbers.

For example, if you see that people are looking for “dog training books” and your site is about dog training, you’ll want to target that keyword, as well as other related keywords. However, you’re going to need to be careful to not target too broadly. If you start targeting terms related to dog food, you might find that the relevance of your site to “dog training” is diluted.

The first step you need to when establishing your site, before you create and post any content, is to build a list of keywords that are most likely to drive traffic, and sales, to your site.

If you haven’t built your keyword list, follow these tips to get it done:

  1. 1. Know your niche. Talk to people who are interested in your niche, beginners and experts. Ask them how they define terms and how they search on the web. Keep a list of what they tell you.

  2. 2. Search for that list of terms on Google and add to your list. See if you can build a list of 50 terms to get started. Include brand names, common answers to common problems, general terms, specific terms such as brand and product names, and if it’s relevant, location terms such as neighborhoods, cities, counties and states.

  3. 3. Start testing. Use Google, Yahoo! and Bing to see what results you get. Are you finding your competition? If so, you are on the right track. If you’re not finding other affiliate marketers, consider returning to step two.

  4. 4. Look at the keywords of your competitors’ websites. They might give you some good ideas.

  5. 5. Go to the Google Keyword Tool and search. Find those items with the lowest competition and the highest volume of searches. This will be the foundation of your keyword list.

  6. 6. Plan your site. Start with a plan of 20 pages, with four chunks of pages with the same primary keyword. You can sprinkle in secondary keywords from your list across the pages.

Now that you have your plan, it’s time to start creating content and getting traffic to your site.

How did you plan the keyword strategy of your site? Leave your feedback in the comments below.
