How to Use Torrents to Spread Your Brand (and Affiliate Offers)

Torrents get a bit of a bad rap because everyone immediately assumes they are used primarily for sharing copyrighted content.

This may be the case for a lot of the torrents out there but at the intent of the protocol was to create a system that allowed peer-to-peer file transfer of large data.

Its use is for any data that needs to be transferred.

So if you see where I’m going with this …

You could leverage the use of torrents to spread your information.

A Quick Glance

Have a look at this search result:

I can’t vouch that all of these have been uploaded by their copyright holders but it does show you that this type of stuff is readily shared on torrents.

If you pay attention to the peers you’ll notice that there aren’t many active torrents outside of the top 10 or so – this means that there are plenty of opportunities for your torrent to get found.

And if you have a variety of information products (or freebies) you can tailor them to the specific keywords so that you begin to rank well for all the major topics you cover on your blog.

The Making of a Torrent

There are many guides already available on the process of creating a torrent:

What I’d like to inject is what you should bother sharing – mainly:

  • Lead generating freebies

  • Extensive, premium articles

  • Podcasts and video courses

The goal is to package a really valuable piece of content.

With lead generating freebies (such as an eBook) you are able to share your work and affiliate links peppered throughout the content. You may not receive the opt-in but you’re still getting the work into the hands of many others that may never have found your website in the first place.

Ebooks offer small file sizes so they’re very easy to download and share which is why you should probably start your torrent creation with this option.

The other options like premium content, podcasts, and video courses give a little more to those searching the torrent sites. The premium guides are great because they’re quick and actionable. The podcasts and video courses inherent come with value because of their size and scope.

Again, you can craft each of these to include affiliate offers.

What you may also want to do is include:

  • A read me file detailing the description, links to your site, and copyright information

  • Call-to-actions to send people to a landing page (which helps with tracking)

  • Custom coupon codes and offers (also helps with tracking)

All these little tweaks can lead to bringing exposure to your brand. It may also convert some of those readers/viewers into customers. You could form a new source of traffic, too.

Distributing the Torrent

Once you’ve decided what you’re sharing and neatly packaged it as a torrent file you can now begin distributing it on the torrent networks.

Here’s the easy part:

You don’t necessarily need to worry about adding your torrent to any specific torrent website. There are many, many torrent search engines and so once your torrent gets picked up it often automatically distributes to all the others since they’re pulling the information from one another.

Go through the list, pick one of the major torrent sites, upload the torrent, make sure you allow it to run, and then sit back as it spreads.

On that note:

  • Create a post on your site which explains to your readers how to use torrents and give them the link for your torrented content.

  • Share this post on your social media accounts and make sure to let everyone know it is your content (and not copyrighted material).

You can see an example like this such as when Tim Ferriss (4HWW and other fame) gave it a go with distributing 4-Hour Chef Audiobook via torrent.

In Closing

Torrents aren’t just about sharing copyrighted information.

YOU can utilize the protocol to share your work across various networks. By doing so you may reach a much wider audience than what you’re capable of through your website and social media efforts.

Creating a torrent takes just a few minutes of your time so it’s certainly worth a try.
