Write Better Email Subject Lines

Our first reaction when receiving an email is to hit delete. Don’t deny it because we all value our time and if the email isn’t what we expected (or from someone we know) than it’s getting tossed out.

Your habit for email is shared by your followers and customers. Sure, they said they want to listen to your message but it doesn’t stop them from ignoring it.

Let’s change that with through one major element: the email subject line.

Here’s how to make them pop …

The “Timely”

Information needs to be relevant to the individual at the right time in their lives. Working with time on your side, try a variation of a weekly or monthly newsletter that stays consistent. Consistency will improve your open rates as your subscribers will have come to expect your email. Additionally, ensuring the timely email has valuable information will have your subscribers excited for the next.

The “Call Out”

“You” or better yet, [Your Name]. Either speaking directly to a person through the use of “you” or their real name is an instant head turner. An email that lands in your subscribers inbox with a subject line that includes their name will immediately peak their attention because it’s been personalized and people can’t resist inquiring what they’ve received due to the personal nature.

The “No, This Can’t Be True. Can It?”

Numbers, claims, and results may not seem like a big deal for you as you see them every day but your subscribers will definitely turn their attention your way if you hit them with something almost unbelievable. Try digging up your sales records and work in a title that shares this detail but wrapped around how your subscribers could experience the same; you’ll, of course, back it up with your information and use it as a platform to get your message consumed.

The “Oops”

Want to be crafty? Intentionally (or purposely) release an email that’s not all there or “wasn’t meant” to go out so soon such as a leak you read about in business. Subscribers may immediately contact you about the email topic but this also gives you the opportunity to create an instant follow up to reiterate your message under the guise of being an “oops” moment (double exposure!).

Better Subject Lines in 3 … 2 … 1 ….

The real method to writing better subject lines comes from understanding your audience.

The best way to do this is by digging through your data to understand what content they enjoy, asking them directly for feedback on how to improve, and including split testing within your emails to build upon past success.

When combined with the strategies mentioned, and the research above, you’ll begin to understand what subject lines are valuable to your specific email list; for now, test what you’ve learned here and make tweaks and improvements for the future. Repeat. Success.

What have you found to be effective when creating subject lines?
