I think if you find a host that offers you what you want at the right price with 24hr support then you can't go wrong, they are all in competition they wouldn't have customers if they didn't look after their hosted sites.
Also I don't think it matters whether you domain and host are together, you make like the system better with one hosting company but not the domain.
