I don't have extensive research, but from what I've seen, my ads in the #2 spot get clicked less, but the users spend longer on my sites and convert better. I'm thinking of playing with the settings so I only appear in #2 and 3. Maybe this is because the #1 spot is clicked without thinking while you would have to read the ads to click #2 over #1.
