Have a few sites to start with. Say three or four and then go from there

It completely depends on your site and the networks you are with. If you are with the best affiliate networks then one or two will do. Since you can make a good ROI from this. Moreover if you wish to make money fast you can join many affiliate programs.

Well, you sorta have to start out with one site since every journey is started with the first step. You will probably find that as you gain experience and get a couple of sites under your belt that you hate your first site and wind up revamping it numerous times.
I would start with a Conduit site...buy a domain that is sort of vague like billswonderfulreviews dot com and then add subdomains off of that like dieting.billswonderfulreviews or onlinegambling.billswonderfulreviews or forex.blahblahblah....that way you have an ever growing number of domains with a lot of content, which search engines LOVE! This may sound very simple but sometimes simple is what works best...then repeat again and again and again! The cool thing is that once you get these sites built it's pretty much hands free because most of your traffic is coming from organic search results off of Google or MSN or Yahoo...get it? In my opinion , the better strategy is to start with one or two sites so that we can have control over what we do than to start with many sites and loose control over them. This is the mistake most affiliates especially newbies commit. Once we have become skilled at what we do then it becomes very easy to launch as many new campaigns as we want.
