I ran across this article which had some useful info on the Retail Affiliate Marketing. Basically they say it is maturing and growing, but it is becoming harder to do without putting in a good amount of effort. The trend is going towards Super Affiliates.

This was a short, yet, good read. I think I saw some similar information to this late last year or very early this year.
Bottom line, the retail industry is just in a gross realignment online and offline. The way people were spending was ridiculous and could not be sustained. However, everyone is still not on the internet so if a little niche can be carved out in the retail space, if you have the time and resources, I believe it is still doable but it looks like you better pay attention and mimic the big boys (super affiliates) to be successful.

the article was published on september 12, 2008, so it may have been the same article you saw last year. Its nice to see though that alot of the material in the article is still holding true up to now |

it talks about how affiliate marketing is still cost effective with the economy and stuff, but what about conversions? with people being unemployed, i'm sure they have more time to browse the net. but are they really converting?

If it is from September of last year, I'm sure a lot has changed. That was before the US stock market crash. Though affiliate marketing is still probably more cost effective for marketers I bet the benefits for affiliates has decreased since then.
