California has plans to alter the affiliate marketing industry by categorizing affiliates as a sales presence for out-of-state advertisers, which will levy taxes against these out-of-state advertisers. This can HEAVILY affect publisher relationships in the state. Mark Kirschner, CMO of linkshare, shared a letter that he is sending to each of the CA assembly members.
http://www.affiliatetip.com/LinkShare-CA-letter.pdf What do you think about this? New York has passed similar legislation, and other states may soon follow. |

wow that is ridiculous. On one side, people are getting laid off and need to find other means of work, and on the other, they find a new means of work and get taxed!

It's a shakedown is what I think. I won't cut of my affiliates like amazon did in New York but it will hurt our business as a merchant. If or when other states follow suit we'll have to promote more through our international affiliates.
