Default PPC or SEO

How do you prefer to get traffic to a site at first?

PPC is faster, but it costs money.

SEO takes time, but is less costly.

Of course, time=money, so....

Buy a million email mailing list for $10 and spam everyone! (jokes)

PPC is good but does cost money.
I like to find quality forums to join and interact with. Well, ones that let you have a signature.... But I DO NOT SPAM. I honestly try and post quality info and not just respond with "nice post" or "good info".

Back to PPC, an additional advantage of using PPC at the beginning is that you will cause Google or Yahoo to crawl your site faster if you use their PPC. So $10 for a quick spider is not too bad.

Of course blogging and the use of the social bookmarking sites help out.
Creating a video for youtube can also work.

I tried forcing registration by gun point but the return traffic was lacking.

There is no one way I believe, but rather you have to use a mixture of all of the methods.

my 2 cents

Did I detect a little jab there? Well you signature is working now. You do post great replies and I always find them helpful.

I hadn't thought about the quick crawl from signing up for PPC. Most of the time I don't run PPC on anything that isn't already fairly successful. I might have to try that and throw in a few dollars to start and then wait to launch my full blown campaign.

I have a warped sense of humor. Comes from all the video games I play

With site trust so low and scams so high in these times I like to get a bit of branding going before launching a full campaign. This helps to build trust along with getting spidered quickly.
We're currently working on a sister site for HCG that sells Kids Toys.
Before we start targeting specific toys we will launch a Branding Campaign prior to a full fledged targeted marketing campaign.
This way when Christmas comes around people will already identify with and trust this new sister site.

So for these branding campaigns is your main focus exposure of the name and logo?

Yes it is. I find gamers do a lot of window shopping so I try and build some authority with them. I had done a survey of my customers on how they found me. Many had said they seen my ad "somewhere" and then seen it again for a specific product they were looking for.
So perhaps seeing our ad in two separate searches (broad and exact) built some authority and trust?

Sometimes I'll see an ad somewhere about a new brand where they feature reviews and then if I see that product while with people I will say something like "I heard that was..." I finally realized that I had only heard it from them, but still, that first campaign made me trust them.

Excellent point!
Reviews are important. I do know some companies pay people to review their company at various review sites and forums.
