Press Release

I hear more and more epople are using press releases to advertise news. I'd like to learn more about press releases being used to announce the launch of a website. Does anyone have experience with them, and comments. I have no idea how they work or how effective they are.

I have used many of the major press release sites like prweb, they generate a bunch of low quality links and usually rank very well in yahoo but never hit google's radar. I usually use free/cheap press release sites which do very well in google and cost between $1-$10 each...or free.
