I checked out the site and then realized this was online gambling. Isn't it illegal for US based affiliates to promote online gambling? How are the conversions?

The way UIGEA is now (that is the law that deals with online gambling) it is very unclear what is and is not illegal. Some online casinos still accept US players, some accept US affiliates. To answer your question, it is not by default illegal, but it would be best to ask the Chipleader affiliate manager just to check if you can work with them.
