The secret to e-mail blasts is to make them worthwhile. So many people struggle to get 5-10% open and there is no reason it should be that low. Obviously if you're getting e-mail addresses for something else and then sending out newsletter the response will be low, but that is your own fault.
I make sure to get e-mail addresses for the newsletter. My send count is lower than it could be but I get open rates of 30-40%. When people sign up specifically for a newsletter, they are much more likely to open it. Make sure you have an archive and then a sign up submit box right near it. I have been using iContact to manage my e-mails. There are plenty of programs that work very similarly, I was recommended this one and it has been working so I am going to stick with it. (It is on the less expensive end) Whatever program you use though, make sure to keep track of everything. Are more people opening the e-mail? Are there more clicks? I found I could keep track of what sections were producing the most clicks and made more content that was like those sections. The main thing is that you never want to become spam. If you become irrelevant or send out e-mail too often, people will ignore you and then it is all over. |

e-mail blasts are good, but too much of anything is bad. i'd agree that you have to make them worthwhile, but even if they are worthwhile and you send out a ton, your conversions may decrease
