I always hold onto lists, just in case. (Actually, I hold on to almost everything just in case. You should see my computer backups, almost a terabite) Anyhow, a few weeks ago I dug up an old list that I thought might be similar to something I am promoting. It had about 2K contacts on it that had all opt-in. I sent it out and got about a 25% bounce rate, but to my surprise, almost a 15% open rate with a decent amount of clicks. I have since cleared the bounced addresses and have sent out a few other e-mails with similar results.
So before you trash an old list, maybe it is time you try and give new life to it with a fresh newsletter. Just make sure its coming from the same source, otherwise you might break some spam laws and go to spam prison. (which I hear is designed to resemble a spam filter box)

Well said Greg. That's a good idea to get decent open rates and click rates. But there are still many ways to get updated and accurate contact details. There are some business directories which list company addresses, phone numbers and email ids. They have a regularly updated contact list, with phone numbers and email ids of decision makers. I’m sure this will help you to get better responses.
