Before every post in your blog ask yourself this. "will someone want to read this" If you keep the end user in mind, you will have a much higher chance of success that someone that uses their blog as a diary.

Quality content and using all of the social bookmarking sites help. I had one of my articles picked up by family magazine and they found me through Digg. Of course putting your link wherever you can helps too. Make sure you have feeds and all of that set up. Use Ping o matic also.
There is no end to what you can do. I do know that a controversial article can draw a lot of attention. "Martians - Are they really Green?"
