I don't have extensive research, but from what I've seen, my ads in the #2 spot get clicked less, but the users spend longer on my sites and convert better. I'm thinking of playing with the settings so I only appear in #2 and 3. Maybe this is because the #1 spot is clicked without thinking while you would have to read the ads to click #2 over #1.

Yeah, I've noticed that on my one campaign, i get more traffic when I'm between 3rd and 6th...guess its just the way people view the pages.

I see something similar once in a while. My only guess is that some people just leave sites quickly and they like to click the #1 spots. Just some impatient people!

I have read a study on this. #1 spot is great for fast traffic and branding but as said people are clicking the first ad because they are lazy.
The people that click lower down are the serious shoppers as they are actually reading the ads. Another factor is that people will often scroll to the bottom of the search returns and then once at the bottom glance to the right side of the screen. Since they are scrolled down, when they start scrolling back up you now appear towards the top. I hear middle placement has better ROI because of this.

thats a good idea about the down then right idea. Once they run out of down space the only place left to look is on the right and at that point the top few are off the screen. Maybe this will create a whole new below the fold trend.

I have been doing a lot of web page "Eye Tracking" research in order to improve conversions. Some of it is quite fascinating watching how a person views a web page. I had a link to a great youtube video that showed live demonstrations but I seem to have misplaced it.
There is a lot to learn from this type of information. Such as how people scan the page as opposed to reading it. How content presented in "blocks" with a header is much better than large amounts of text. How long menus get little attention. How image banners are quickly dismissed unless the viewer is a male and there is an attractive woman in it. The reverse is true for women. I guess they like to look too ![]() I'll try and find that video next time I get a chance. It really is a must for any site owner and great food for thought. HCG

Eye tracking is really interesting. I try to factor all the time when I try to figure out why things are placed a certain way.

I see that ads, is just a conection with the landpage, if be more straight to who you want to click in the ads. The ads also have high conection with keywords, the best conection with that 3 points we get better clicks converted.
