Default PPC programs, the good, the bad and the ugly

I have been experimenting a bit with PPC for my poker site about a year ago. The two sites that I found the most untrustworthy were GoClick and MIVA.

GoClick seemed to go well for a while, but all of the sudden I analyzed my stats and found many clicks coming from the same IP. This kind a' happened all the time I was in the top positions of keywords like "poker". I also found that almost no traffic came from long tail phrases at all.

With MIVA... I had like 1000 hits in one hour, but 0 pageviews... I think that says enough!

So what are your experiences???

I have never had good experiences with pay per click in gaming. For affiliate terms though I have done alright. Like you said too, there is so much click fraud out there it makes it hard outside of the big companies.

If you feel you are NOT achieving a maximum return of investment for the money you are spending for PPC campaigns or paying out to SEO and SEM companies you are correct. Today, Search Engine Optimization must start during web site development. Many individuals and corporations are utilizing outdated developmental techniques (Flash sites, hard coded static sites) that do not comply with present day Web Standards (W3C). As a result their web sites are not optimized to perform across Internet Browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera) and technological devices (Mac, pc, cell phones). PPC campaigns will not fix this problem. PPC campaigns are good in theory, but in practice quite ineffectual for a number of reasons and can become a tremendous expense. Many other ways exist to increase your overall web exposure and online success beginning with site develop, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and content.
