I am a new affiliate and thinking about getting into a sports niche like selling fathead products. For those of you that have been in the game for a while, is it still possible to SEO your way up to the top spots for semi-competitive terms?
I have also read that I should buy an older domain with some established backlinks. Any other advice for a newbie like me

For sure you can still get near the top of the Google SERPs.
It will take hard work for competitive terms but it is possible. If I were you I would target some specific niches and dominate those. Buying an aged domain with some page rank would be helpful but isn't needed |

Very soon I will be giving the casino/sportsbook industry a stab too...its pretty intimidating though, for every online poker room I know of (and I know most) there are like 20 casinos I have never even heard of...may god have mercy on my soul :-)

With buying a domain, I would only buy it if I actually liked the domain also. Don't force yourself to buy an awful domain just because it has a few backlinks. I would much rather pay $9 for a domain I liked with no backlinks, rather than pay $100 for a terrible domain name with some backlinks.

mikebrad brings up a great point. Don't try to be the next pokerlistings or something like this. You must make sure you have a defined niche and target smaller keywords first to build your site.
For example, on one of my sites I wanted to attract poker players looking to play in online poker leagues. Instead of going after 'online poker leagues' as my first keyword I went after 'internet poker leagues'. A much less competitive keyword, but it got me some traffic to start while I built up me SEO standings for 'online poker leagues'. Now I rank top 4 in Google for both terms. |

Yes It is possible to seo your way to number 1 in the SERPs for a semi-competitive keyword even as a newbie
It will take a lot of effort and hard work on your part Not really into buying old domain names myself. Just try and get a new domain name with your keywords in it Lots of On page SEO, lots of backlink building lots of time and you can get there There are some useful tips on On page SEO at http://www.affiliatemarketingintro.c...imization.html Last edited by Niche; 04-19-2008 at 03:55 PM.
