are .edu blog posts beneficial or will they get me penalized?

Dot edu links are said to be really good for SEO. But in my experience, they are useful for just that. They don't actually bring much direct traffic

Needs some effort but works

I'd say they are beneficial, when done in moderation. Also make sure it's a clean page - if it's filled with viagara spam then you could be pretty certain the page is flagged by now and not passing any value.
