Best Way to Get Indexed in Google

I remember getting indexed in one day after buying a new .com domain. The only sites that linked to me were whoises. That was fun

Forum posting, blogging and video have helped to get my site spidering rather quickly.

You need to post lots of quality content with tons of quantity. The spiders seem to love video, forums, and blogs.

Link exchange also help you for better PR.

So, what I am hearing is that if I am building a new site or blog, which I am, I DO NOT submit it to a directory? Has something changed that I am not aware of? I just want to be thorough because the game does change overnight on the internet. I want to do it right the first time so that changes are easier and systematic.
