i've seen successful affiliates who have PR's ranging from 2-5. I'm just wondering though, how important is it? Isn't it just based on how many links you have pointing to your site?

When talking about SEO, then PR shows the total value of links coming to that page. PR5 can be achieved by getting 10 links from other PR5 pages or 10000 links from weak/low quality pages.
Depending on the niche/keyword, there can be enough with as little as PR2 to rank well for the desired keywords and make money, and there can be niches where even PR5 is seen as little. Technically, what you should do when performing link building is go after quality links from pages that are relevant to your site and have at least a bit of PageRank. Remember, PageRank 5 seen on homepage, doesn't mean your link will be placed there. Often your link will be placed on deep page with PR1-2. |

Sandis, is that actual numbers from Google? 10 links from PR 5 gives you PR 5 or are you just using numbers to demonstrate the idea?

Ryder -
PR can be a good thing. However, it is not the end of the world if your site doesn't have pr ranking. What Sandis tells you is good advice - but you can make money online, for example, as an affiliate or if you have a list you can promote to without being on page 1 or 2 in the search engines. |

Quick run down on PR at Google PR Quick guide.
Is PR important? Not as important as some marketers will have you think. If you are looking to flip sites, then yes PR is important. The higher the PR, the higher the percieved vale of the site. Also if you are selling links, then again PR is important But if you are just promoting affiliate products from your site or have some adsense sites, then search engine domination is what you need to focus on. Yes with trying to get to the covetted number one position in Google for your keywords, your PR will probably go up. But it's about what you focus on. I have PR 2 sites that rank in the number one position in the SERPs and are getting decent traffic. Am I bothered that the sites are not PR5. I think not

Good quality links from related sources will give you a big boost. Also as some mentioned - you might not require that much PR if you have not that competitive keyword and your on site factors are better optimized. |

There’s so much talk about PageRank not being as important as it used to be. Well, I too agree to it to a degree but not entirely. And the reason for this is that the Google indexes pages of sites with PageRank within minutes of publishing. Where as the sites with NO PageRank has to wait for Google’s periodic update to get fully indexed. Well there’re other ways to index pages of site that have no PageRank. If you’re a webmaster then I am sure you know how.
AS PR is not related to traffic therefore those who target traffic should lest bother for page rank.

I look at PR as a litmus test. It can tell you something about a site that is valuable, but should never be used alone. There is clearly a trend that bigger, better sites that get more traffic have higher PRs. Then again, not every high PR site has lots of traffic and not every high traffic site has lots of PR. It should be considered one factor of many, but like Niche said, when buying and selling links, it is one of the more important factors.

Page rank is important if your internet property needs to be listed on the first five pages and that is the only way you are getting traffic is through organic SEO.
Outside of that, you need to promote, promote, promote OFF PAGE SEO. That could be newsletter, co-ops, ezine advertising, forum posting/advertising and so forth. That is just my wooden nickel.
