HCG I think the term for that is Google Bowling. It was big in 2005. You could submit someone's site to a bunch of shady banner farms and crap directories and watch them rise on the SERPs and then drop off completely. Google found out about it and made it so mass submission doesn't help you very much but it won't hurt you in the same way. Think of directory links like an exponential curve. The first few help a lot and then from there each helps less until eventually they are doing almost nothing.

They are still good for actually user views, if the directory is used and relevent though, so don't let that stop you.

I think 2005 was just after I sold my gambling portals and I took a year off to travel.
Glad I missed it.

You cannot rule out directories for sure. I get regular traffic and sales from them.

What directories are you guys talking about, can you give me examples?

Also, can someone use Google Bowling to bring down competitive websites?
