If you want global distribution and good response times everywhere, cloud computing is the answer.
It costs about the same as a simple dedicated server, and requires only the normal tech skills of such. You just create a virtual machine (Linux or Windows) in the cloud, set it up the way you want, and pay 10 cents per hour. My Debian server has been running continuously for many months. I have used BlueHost. It haven't had any major problems, but then again I don't have a ton of traffic going through my site all the time. They had won some awards so I knew they were decent and it is hard to beat $7 a month.
