Code view or Layout?

I am not a web design expert but I have worked on a few small projects where we needed a site quickly and were on a tight budget so I handled it myself. I prefer to use the layout view much more. From what I have been reading, it seems like the pros just work with straight code. A guy I know that is brilliant with code will just use a text editor and make a beautiful site. I do try and balance it so my code is not too heavy. I try and keep check of both, but I really do prefer to see things the way they will appear instead of just code.
