i'm planning on developing a rather large website, and am unsure whether to outsource the tech work internationally or hire someone locally. Has anyone had any good/bad experiences working with offshore teams?

I have been thinking about the same thing. I have heard some horror stories about working with people overseas but then again it has worked for some people. I guess I would be worried about working with someone I have never met because if something goes wrong, it would be hard to get a hold of them.

It depends mostly on your requirements and the budget of the project.. There have been companies who outsource most of their projects to cut costs...!

Looking in to this more I've found that for some basic but time consuming tasks, it might be worth it to outsource, but for detail and quickly editable tasks, in person works best. Something like color matching is easy, but might require 3-5 adjustments and this would much easier be done quickly than over e-mail bounces.
It would be nice to find someone on the other side of the world to do some work though so I could go to bed and wake up with site improvements. |

Yes theirs definitely benefits working with someone over seas, but also a lot of delay at the same time. I used to out source some of our programming and graphics back in the days before I started programming and not to mention language barriers.

obviously tons of companies outsource their work, but there are so many countries with strong tech backgrounds, so I wasn't sure weather I should go with a developer in my local time zone who i could just call up, or a team in india or russia or something. |

Outsourcing your projects is not an easy task..though you have the comfort of getting it done at low cost..you still need to be active to know the status as well as be clear about your deadlines with the company you are working with.
You can hire an individual or a company to do the project for you but it's you who should be in constant touch with them to know the status..It's just like hiring a local guy who is sitting in the next room and all your conversations are via IM , Email or Phone. I would love to hear more about your project and see if we can work together on your project.
