Alot of the "web 2.0" style websites seem to be based on RoR (ruby on rails) framework, but isn't it essentially just php? I fail to see the huge difference, but i am hearing it talked about alot lately.

Well, RoR is technology based on completelly different programming language (Ruby) than PHP. It offers also much faster development for some types of websites than PHP does.

You can't compare ruby on rails to php. ruby on rails is a framework for the programming language: ruby. You can compare ruby to php. While ruby on rails lovers will say "you can program faster with ruby on rails than php" may be true in some cases it is still comparing apples to oranges. Ruby on rails is a "framework" for a programming language. You can compare Ruby to PHP. You can compare ruby on rails to cakephp in which case you are comparing two frameworks for two programming languages. cakephp and codeignitor are "frameworks" for php and both allow for fast develpment of "php" based websites. I have used both php and ruby and find php far superior. But when comparing "frameworks" ruby on rails outways most php frameworks. If you are looking for a programming language to use I would recommend php or ruby any day.

PHP is good, they have a great team and lots of followers.
A lot does depend upon what you intend to do with your site. Also how much money you want to spend. ColdFusion has it's place as does the .net framework. I have used them all and for good old data manipulation PHP serves me well. |
