Remember that saying “the early bird catches the worm”?
Waking early is one of the major traits exhibited by hundreds of millionaires. While others are groggily slumping out of bed at 8 or 9am it’s those with the millionaire mindset (and drive) that has them waking up between 4 and 6am. They’re all ready and out the door before you’ve had your first cup of coffee.
To the masses we label them as “morning people”.
There isn’t some magical formula to become this type of person because it really comes down to disciple. Discipline not only in your sleep habits but happens the night before and what’s on the table during the day.

The planning part of developing a better morning schedule is slightly difficult because we never know what the world may throw at us. Some nights we may need to burn the midnight oil in order to reach deadlines for the following day. These times are the outliers though so just stay focused on the majority of days you can control.
Readying for Success
Ever wonder why you never have trouble knowing it’s a holiday morning or you’ve got to catch an early morning flight? It’s because it’s exciting and big things are abound to happen during the day.
Going to sleep without goals for the next day is going to make it a slog in the morning because there’s little motivation other than to just get there and work. Plan for action by writing out your major goals you wish to accomplish.
At the end of the night
Try to avoid eating, drinking caffeine, or alcohol at least a few hours before laying down. Once you’re in bed it should only be there for you to sleep meaning no browsing the Web or checking emails.
Take a warm shower and drop the AC temperature so it’s nice and chill. Turn off all those lights and create a sleep environment that knocks you out as soon as you’re down.
Hopefully you were able to get a full 8 hours of sleep but we all know that when the buzzer goes off we’re still going to swing our hand to the snooze button. That’s one of the habits that needs a break.
A Morning Ritual
You can change this however you see fit but this is a type of ritual that works for many:
- As soon as you wake up drink a big glass of water to rehydrate and throw open those blinds
- Do any form of short circuit exercise (it can be a simple 7 minute routine doing pushups, squats, and crunches) – this will get the adrenaline going
- Hop right into that shower (but not hot – keep it kind of cool)
- Sort out the clothes you need and do any body routine you’ve developed
- Go down and make yourself a healthy breakfast like eggs, sausage, and toast
- Now is a good time to have a cup of coffee or tea
- Go back to the bathroom to brush those teeth
Before you’re ready to step out into the world take a few more minutes for deep breathing. Take that time to reflect on all you’ve accomplished and what goals you’ll achieve today.
It’s all about the Routine
Yours will be different than mine but what we should all examine is:
- What we’re doing now
- What we could be doing
If you’re not a morning person at this time then it’s obvious that something needs to change. It will take a lot of willpower and dedication those first few weeks but once it sticks you’ll have developed a routine held by some of the most productive people in business.
