One of the biggest battles that online marketers and entrepreneurs face before creating a successful business, is knowing how they are going to make money online and what marketing methods they are going to use. In my last article we talked about the choices you have in front of you, mainly between choosing to run ad campaigns or creating a web site.
This article is a follow up in the series and we are going to focus on the path of creating a web site and how you can start making money with a web site and what focus you should take.
First of all, setting up a web site is much easier than you think. The costs of getting a domain name and hosting is less than $10 a year for the domain and another $10 a month for hosting. You can also create an HTML based web site, or go the easier route and create a blog or WordPress driven site.
Let’s now dive into four different ways that you can start making money with a web site of your own. We are going to cover blogs, content web sites, resource sites and ecommerce sites.
Creating a Blogging Site
Blogs are awesome… this site is actually a blog and running off the free WordPress platform that is ridiculously easy to setup and install.
In the past, blogs were thought of as journals and rinky dinky sites but they are now more powerful and profitable than ever. No matter what type of blog you create, you are going to want to make sure you focus your efforts on quality content and branding yourself. We will talk about how to monetize a blog in our next post in this series.
Creating a Content Web Site
The goal behind a content web site is to create content that people want and find interesting, which will potentially lead to more traffic back to your site and sharing among the social networks. When creating a content site, one of the major sources of revenue is through on site banner and media advertising.
One of the best models around is to focus on free content, then as your site builds up over time you can build premier content that you can charge a monthly membership fee for, further building the authority and profitability of your site.
Creating a Resource / Review Web Site
There is also a lot of money to be made in the resources and review industry. This can be anything from sites that focus on individual product reviews or providing coupons for other websites.
The bottom line is, people are using the internet every day to look for coupons and discounts online.
If you build up a nice site that people start using, you can build up a mailing list and also earn commissions every time they make a purchase or use a coupon code through your site. Many coupon and review sites are also using social media and networks to grow their readership by leaps and bounds.
Creating an eCommerce Web Site
Lastly, we have e-commerce based websites.
All of the web site concepts we mentioned above require no product fulfillment, processing or handling of payments. If you would like to create an online store, then starting an e-commerce website might be the best option for you.
All of the concepts mentioned above take time to develop and generate money over time, but an e-commerce store can start making you money right away. All you need to do is set up an online store with a shopping cart solution, add your products, then create a few ad campaigns. It’s a little more complex than that, but you get the idea.
What type of site will you create?
As you can see, there are plenty of site concepts for you to choose from.
When it comes to creating a business online, there are really no limitations.
Try different methods and see what works best for you, and think about where you would like to focus your business in the long run. Doing this and mapping out your business plan and goals before you start will greatly help you in the creation and monetization process.
