QR codes … you may think that they’re on the way out because there are easier options to sharing information through graphics (or just short links) but they can be a very exciting and engaging way to connect with your audience.

In a lot of ways, QR codes have created a small ‘hurdle’ (of some sorts) that qualifies the traffic you receive through this passing of information.

What I’d like to share with you, today, are some of the unique ways you could implement QR codes into your business for a fraction of the cost of other marketing campaigns but still play with your creativity in a manner that’s unmatched to other strategies seen on the market.

Here are a few ideas …

1. Share Lead Generating, List Building Content

You may be hard pressed to get someone to download a book through a short link because it’s hard to tell whether that link may be malicious in context. QR codes, on the other hand, seem to be associated with the tech-enabled which means you’d most likely find them paired with information that needs to be shared.

Case-in-point: information products.

You may have seen a similar image floating around (as noted) of free ebooks because they’re in the public domain which means they’re free to download but you can certainly take the same approach to your information products – – such as ebooks and video courses.

Consider creating a QR code for one of your landing pages that offers a great amount of value such as an in-depth tutorial, freebie download, or email course, and begin plastering it in areas you deem suitable to share such as bulletin boards in libraries, business cards at conferences, or using old school methods such as flyers around local business hotspots.

2. Distribute Exclusive Discounts to Regular Visitors

One other way you may want to use QR codes is through exclusive discounts to members willing to take the time to understand and utilize the format.

Coupons can be a great way to spur up additional sales to what you have to offer during major holiday events or promotional periods but what’s really going into play, with QR codes, is that they create a small “hurdle” (of some sorts) so that only your most passionate consumers will take advantage of the deal.

What this does, on the surface, is help you understand what’s hot in what you have to offer. You can essentially gauge your promotions based on the response of the QR codes. Not only will you create a new list of passionate customers willing to take advantage of QR code coupons but you can essentially use this lead generating format to split test offers within your tight-knit community!

3. Leverage Guerrilla Marketing Campaigns on the Cheap

Lastly, QR codes can be used to conduct guerrilla marketing campaigns on a very limited budget.

As mentioned, you could employ the use of this format through various means such as:

  • Flyers around your local community college or university
  • Placing them on your automobile for when you park
  • Handing them out on business cards and other print media
  • Spray painting them, like graffiti, in high foot traffic areas

You can use your imagination with this one – again, you’re creating a small “barrier” that will push back those that may just be freebie hunting – – you’ll obtain those that are truly interested in what you have to offer because it’s outside of the “norm” when it comes to advertising.

You’ll obviously need to pair them in areas that actually demand what you have to offer but the opportunity still stands.

The Future of QR Codes

QR codes seem to have been all the rage when they were first introduced to the market but technology and society has seem to pushed back on the platform because there are easier options to share information. However, the small “hurdle” that’s introduced through QR codes could be your ticket to an increase amount of engagement with your most vocal community members because it creates a form of “gamification” in their participation.

The strategies listed in this post give you a few ideas on how to be creative with QR codes and will hopefully inspire you to play with the format. See what you can create from this option for your business, and test out the opportunities.
