Optimizing your page for SEO success takes time, diligence, and knowledge. And, since your time is money, there’s no need to waste it on SEO practices that really aren’t going to help you out in the long run.
Do your own search engine optimization research so that you can gain first-hand knowledge of how to do SEO the correct way and follow the big names that are doing it the right way. As the saying goes, imitation is the highest form of flattery.
Here are eight SEO practices that you should rethink before throwing all your time into them.
1. Keyword stuffing: It’s tempting, I know – but, really, keyword stuffing has the potential to back-fire. Doing things like using the Meta Keywords tag is a waste of time. Also, putting a ton of keyword-rich content below the footer isn’t going to help you gain traffic.
2. Indexing a lot of pages: Just because your site has a ton of pages doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to take the time to index them all, and there’s no security that doing so will increase your site’s traffic. Therefore, think quality over quantity here.
3. Be careful of your link exchanges: Let’s take three-way links, for example. Most people sign up for it to manipulate search results. However, if the other two sites aren’t linked so to help boost yours, then your point is moot.
4. Don’t segment your own content: Segmenting becomes problematic when you have many areas of content coming together in a single web page and there’s a ton of segmentation requirements.
You can also run into problems with segmenting if you’re pulling in traffic from numerous places and your first language, and that of which your page is written in, isn’t the same as theirs.
5. Continuously updating your pages: This is not to say that once a page has become successful that you never touch it again. In actuality, you should be updating your pages that are pulling in the traffic – just not daily.
Let the search engines have a chance to crawl and index them first.
6. Using PageRank: Google itself admits that it’s only one of two hundred tools that determine how a site holds authority in Google.
Rankings depend on so many factors to influence them and the diversity among locations and computers have the potential to throw them off.
Put your time to better use elsewhere in the SEO realm.
7. Submitting to tons of search engines: Pick the few most valuable and direct your attention there. Don’t bother with the smaller ones unless their crawling and spidering algorithm is worth it.
8. Create numerous Google Place pages: Google is on to you – don’t waste your time submitting a lot of Place pages with one address.
Everyday search giants like Google are creating improved algorithms to deter this kind of behavior. You’ll end up hurting your page in the long run.
