Do you ever wonder why some affiliate sites with terrific content, lots of information, and quality advice don’t get the same SEO results as other sites?
As we wrap up this last week of the Site-Building Challenge, we’re going to answer that question. And we’re going to show you how you can create great content for your affiliate site that also brings in maximum traffic.
Those sites with great content and low traffic don’t fail because of the content itself. The reason they don’t succeed is a lack of attention to search engine optimization (SEO). While SEO might sound like an intimidating, technical process, it’s actually fairly simple.
When you’re creating quality content for your website, you’ll need to create your content in a way that helps the search engines connect readers with your content. This kind of SEO work is not a quick solution, but a long-term commitment to delivering quality content to your audience in a manner that’s friendly to the search engines.
As you’re getting started on this process, here are four tips to use when creating your content that can help you get the most traffic to your site.
1) Use long-tail keywords. Don’t just target “dog” or “cat.” As a beginner, it will be tough, if not impossible, to compete for those one-word terms. Start off with long-tail keywords (3-5 word combinations) that have less competition. If you check the Google Keyword Tool, you’ll see that “how to train your dog” has many fewer searches than “dog” (dog has 83 million searches per month, how to train your dog has 74,000). But because there are fewer sites competing for that term, it means you can make it to page one much faster … if you’re doing everything right.
2) Use your keywords in the copy on your site. When you’re writing copy for your site, use your keywords in about 2-3 percent of your site’s body copy. That’s around 4 times in a 400-word article for a three-word keyword. If you use your keywords more than that, it might appear to search engines that you’re “keyword stuffing.” And that could lead to your site being penalized for overusing keywords.
3) Place keywords at the beginning. A best practice in writing SEO-friendly content is to include your keywords at the beginning of paragraphs, early in your content, in the front of your headline, title tag, and other places. Why? It makes it easier for the search engines to find the keywords.
4) Don’t go crazy with SEO optimization. When you’re writing copy for the search engines, it’s important to keep your readers in mind. Never forget that you’re creating your content for people to learn from, read and enjoy. If you put too much focus on keywords, and cram them into every nook and cranny of your site, you might find that it turns your readers off.
If you find it too challenging to write content that’s keyword-focused, just forget about it. Instead, write great content that answers your audience’s questions, then go back and lightly sprinkle your keywords into the content.
