DuckDuckGoThere is no denying that Google is king in the world of online searches. However, DuckDuckGo is quickly moving up the ladder and giving web surfers all over the world a nice alternative.

As you compare DuckDuckGo to more traditional search engines – including Google, Yahoo, and Bing – it is easy to see that there are a couple major differences.

  • DuckDuckGo strongly believes in privacy. Currently, the company does not record any user information. As you probably know, this is a sticking point with many people when it comes to Google.
  • It is often times described as a “hybrid” search engine thanks to results that are pulled from multiple sources including: Yahoo Search, Wolfram Alpha, Wikipedia, and its own crawler.

Company founder Gabriel Weinberg had this to say:
“By default, DuckDuckGo does not collect or share personal information. That is our privacy policy in a nutshell.”

The search engine does not log user information, it only uses cookies when absolutely necessary, and most importantly, it does not store IP addresses.

Is DuckDuckGo a serious threat to Google? At this time, the short answer is no. That being said, many people are falling in love with the “privacy first” policy adopted by this search engine.

Earlier this week, the search engine reached a major milestone when it received its first million-search day. As an affiliate marketing professional, this is something to keep an eye on. As searches continue to rise, there may be an opportunity to take advantage. After all, who doesn’t want to generate traffic from less competitive sources?

Kicking things off in 2012 was a new design, complete with a clean interface that avoids clutter and excess content – much in the mold of Google. Along with this, the company recently updated its SERPs allowing users to easily navigate the web with efficiency.

DuckDuckGo may not be a major competitor in the search industry right now, but all this could change in 2012 if the company continues to make strides. A simple yet effective design, coupled with a unique engine powered by multiple sources, has turned heads. Add in its privacy features and watch out. DuckDuckGo could be the next big thing this year!
