The Basics of Joining Your First Affiliate Program
One of the most successful affiliate programs of all time, is the Amazon Affiliate Program, which instantly gives you access to promote and earn a commission on nearly every single product on their web site. Since Amazon.com already has millions of customers and is a well established brand, it will make it that much easier for you to promote and earn a commission on referred sales.
Through this post we will walk you through the basics of how individual affiliate programs work, how you can create links and generate commissions on referred sales and actions.
The first step, is simply to get started. You can join the Amazon affiliate program, by visiting https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/. It’s free to create an account, and only take a couple minutes to setup.
When you get to Amazon’s site, you will see they have a quick overview of how their affiliate program works, and the different linking methods available to affiliate.
One thing you will notice a lot in affiliate marketing, is the massive difference in affiliate payouts and commissions for each offer. Some offers may pay .10 per lead, while others can pay over $40. In the screenshot above, you will see how it says “Earn up to 15% in referrals by advertising Amazon products.”. When you are at the Amazon affiliate page, you can click on this link and it will send you to their affiliate payout structure page, and you can see the full chart below.
Affiliate marketing is an interesting industry, because you usually will get paid more money when you provide higher volume. This holds true for many affiliate networks as well. Take note of the different commission payouts you receive from Amazon, based on the product being sold. Obviously, some items on Amazon provide a much higher margin in profit, so they are able to pay out more to affiliates.
The chart below the commission percentages, will show you the bonus in payouts you will receive based on volume. Again, Amazon wants the most business possible from their affiliates, so they are looking to reward their top partners with higher commissions.
Once you are setup as an affiliate with Amazon, you can login to your members area and start creating affiliate links to their main web site or to individual products directly. From inside the affiliate admin area, you will also be able to update your account information, create new links and banners, view traffic and sales reports and monitor all past/future payments.
Just like Amazon.com has their own affiliate program, many other web sites and brands have an affiliate program of their own as well. While Amazon.com has an independent affiliate program, which they manage, many other sites will outsource their affiliate management to “affiliate networks“, which we will cover in the next post.
