Website flipping is the process of building a website (or purchasing an established one) with the sole purpose of selling.

The website projects can come in all forms and levels of investment.

You could do a quick turn-around when developing a micro site and sell it for a few hundred dollars. In other instances you may sit on the project for months (or years), building its traffic and community, and then flipping it for thousands of dollars.

The process is actually quite simple if you’re already experienced with developing sites (considering that you’re operating as an affiliate marketer anyway). The only real difference is that you intend to sell it at a profit which means there is less emotional attachment to the project.

In Part 1 I am going to lay the foundation for what you’d be doing with website flipping; the later parts will delve into the specifics. With that out of the way let’s jump right in…

Website Flipping: New or Established?

When getting into website flipping you’re looking at about two choices:

  • Start a website from scratch and build it up
  • Purchase an established site and fix it up

The expenses obviously are different as a new site could be pieced together on a few hundred dollars whereas the established site may cost you a thousand or more. For beginners I would recommend building a fresh site because it will give you a better learning experience.

Here is what I’d recommend for doing your research:

1. Visit Flippa and take a look at the websites that are currently selling (or have been sold)

2. Keep a count of which types of websites are being sold (topic)

3. Break down these sites to understand the content and extras created to give it attraction to buyers

4. Read the feedback and reports from the buyers and sellers to see how the site is monetized

Once you’ve done the basic research you’ll have a decent idea of how much effort goes into developing these types of websites. You’ll notice many will have between 10 – 20 articles, some form of lead generating ebook/course, and smaller sections to cover news or introduce community discussion.

The actual designs are straight forward, too, which have been optimized for SEO and can easily be modified so you could reuse the design over and over (keeping costs and development time down).

Developing Your Flipping Process

I’m a firm believer in developing a process to work so that it can be streamlined.

The process I develop will be different from yours due to current obligations, resources, budgets, and time. However, I can give you a basic process to build from which should have you ready and setup to quickly make these sites to flip:

1. Choose a profitable topic for your website

2. Figure out at least 3 – 5 categories of content you will produce (go ahead and start writing)

3. Research the top selling products (using Amazon), affiliate with them, and create reviews

4. Purchase the domain name and website theme

5. Set up the website and populate it with core content and schedule others to go out every few days

6. Begin creating additional content for guest posting to build backlinks

7. Setup social profiles branded to the website (which can later be sold as part of the package)

8. Advertise and promote the website through social channels and advertising platforms

9. Continue to increase website traffic, community engagement, and content production

10. Stabilize the traffic and allow it to continue to grow for a short amount of time

Once you’ve got it up, running, full of content, building lists, and gathering a following you could go back over to Flippa and sell your website.

In the later parts I’ll go deeper into these core items but for now this gives you a process and blueprint for creating these sites to flip.

Conclusion

Website flipping can be quite a thrill. It allows you to constantly work on new projects and explore topics that may have been on your mind. Once you successfully flip your first site and develop a process you should have no issues with making this into a regular money-maker for your business.
